A former Northland politician says most locals want to see tourists this summer.
A leaked email shows Te Tii Waitangi ki Te Pēwhairangi has been planning to re-establish border controls when Auckland opens to the rest of the country on December 15.
It would effectively block tourists from Opua, Waitangi, Russell and Paihia.
Former New Zealand First MP and Northland resident Shane Jones told Heather du Plessis-Allan it's a small minority group wanting border controls.
“Northland needs Aucklanders, we need tourists to open their wallets and sustain the economy in the north.”
